Student Spotlight: Jessica McCarwell

News

She started as a public volunteer at the Atlantic Film Festival, and now she’s organizing multiple weddings while being a full-time student.

Jessica McCarvell is looking at one busy summer as an Event and Promotions Management student.

Before starting the Event and Promotions Management program, Jessica had always been interested in events; but didn’t know exactly what the industry was called. “For me it clicked when I was volunteering for the Atlantic Film Festival. I came to see the films, but when I saw behind the scenes where people were putting all the pieces together, it really intrigued me,” said Jessica.

In her third quarter of the program, Jessica says the lab times are the best part of the program. “ We’re making calls to venues, contacting people, sending emails,  writing up details, and then seeing our ideas come to fruition,” said Jessica. “This quarter has been very productive as we are now in the thick of it.”

In February, the EPM students produced an anti-Valentine’s day event called Stupid Cupid. Jessica played a crucial role in booking the venue, managing décor and day-of venue set up. “It was a lot of fun being creative and seeing the final product in place.”  Jessica is also working on another class event for June, and is busy securing outdoor space in HRM with the help of her classmates. “We all have specific jobs, but it’s really important for all of us to work as a team.”

Currently, Jessica is assisting with two upcoming wedding ceremonies, which she especially enjoys because of how unique each event is. “I remember wanting to be a wedding planner when I was a very young and now it’s happening. I can’t wait to do more of them,” Said Jessica. “Leave all your preconceived notions at the door, weddings are not what they used to be.”

After graduation, Jessica is determined to collaborate with Halifax locals to put their ideas to life and plan new and innovative events that Halifax has never seen. Keep on the look-out as she starts her own business focusing on community events and weddings.
