CAT connected me with lifelong friends and provided me with the technical skills that have allowed me to express my creativity professionally in an industry that I love. During my program, having the lab time during the day and at night helped me get all of my work done. I enjoyed all the late nights working with my classmates and the bond that was created while working on projects. I …
My overall experience at CATO was amazing. Everything from my peers to the curriculum to the teachers made my year and a half there an unforgettable experience. CATO offered me such a variety of skills that my resume stood out from other graphic designers. Never settle for just “good enough” and keep learning.
As a mature student, I had a fair bit of experience with websites and creating print pieces, but I knew there were some large holes in my skill set. When I reviewed Centre for Arts and Technology’s program, it offered a solid core of the technical skills I wanted to learn, but also touch on areas like photography, video, audio, law, and otherwise, that are complimentary skills that I can …

What do a couple days in the life of a Graphic & Web Design student at CAT look like?
Two days in the life of a Graphic & Web Design student at CAT can be varied, and as a student, you may find yourself in a few different classrooms around campus. Schedules vary from Quarter to Quarter, so this is just an example of what you could expect.
If you drive, you’ll park your car in our student-designated parking lot and make your way across the Landmark Plaza to our campus! If you’ve opted to walk, bike or take the bus, you’ll find lots of great scenery on the short walk from the bike lock-up or transit stop to campus. You have an art class in the drawing room for your first block, Foundation of Art and Design, so you quickly check your backpack to make sure you brought your favourite sketching pencils. You’re really looking forward to this class; your teacher mentioned you will be starting on a new assignment: Emphasis/Focal Point where you learn how to draw the viewers’ eye around your piece.
After class, you decide you need some energy, so you stop by the cafe for a quick coffee, all the cream, all the sugar. Once you’re refueled, you head off to meet up with some classmates to work on a project for your Introduction to Computer Graphic class. You’ve been learning how to put together all the digital assets for a social media campaign in Adobe Photoshop. You’re pleased with your progress so far and you’re looking forward to putting the finishing touches on each piece before submitting.
Lunchtime! You take a break and hit up one of the many great eateries in the Landmark Plaza area. Mmmmm….pizza is on the menu today.
You have another free block next, so you find a quiet spot in an unoccupied classroom and continue working on a few upcoming assignments. It’s so great to have all the software at your fingertips on campus! Also, you love the fact that the campus is open late into the evenings. You’ve always been a nigh towl and these extended hours really work for you.
After your free block, you head back to the main campus building for a Professional Development class. Today you’re going to be diving into Personality Dimensions and starting on a self-portrait assignment. You’ll also be discussing how to find the balance between being a creative individual and securing success for yourself professionally, a topic we take great pride in at CAT. #nostarvingartistshere.
That’s it for today, and you feel like you’ve earned some downtime, so you decide to meet up with some friends to take in a movie. Let’s do this again tomorrow, shall we? New day, new classes, new opportunities.
Tomorrow dawns and you grab your backpack as you dash out the door. First class of the day is Branding, so you head to class to get yourself set up. You’ve been learning about creating brand guidelines and working on some logo concept sketches. There’s a brief introduction from the instructor and then it’s down to work. This assignment has a presentation component, so you practice your presentation with a classmate and before you know it the class is over!
Another free block is up next, and you’ve chosen to dedicate some time working on your self portrait for Professional Development. You’ve chosen a mixed media design and so far, you’re really excited about your progress!
Lunchtime rolls around and this time you find yourself craving some sushi. Good thing there’s lots of great options within walking distance to campus!
Only one class left this afternoon: Tarket Market, Meaning and Messaging, so you meet up with some classmates and head to class. Over the last week you’ve been working on a group assignment called Persona Creation. The goal is to create a persona for a CAT program. Essentially you need to outline who the typical student is for this program and include relevant information including geographic, demographic, psychographic and other behavioural details. Lastly, you must create a design that uses all of this collected information to effectively market to your “persona”. Your group has arranged for a student from your assigned program to visit you in class so you can conduct an in-depth interview. Questions are prepped, you’re ready to go!
That’s it for another day on campus. You can’t believe this is school!! You’ve always been drawn to art and design and you have to pinch yourself that you finally get to pursue this as a career!
Interested in auditing some classes on campus? Book a time with one of our Graphic & Web Design Program Advisors! They can give you a tour of campus and arrange for you to sit in on some Graphic & Web Design classes. What better way to experience the CAT student experience than to become one yourself!
