Charity Begins At Home

News

While many of us dealt with the Covid pandemic by hunkering down with snacks and cable, CAT Digital Photography alumni Deval Kirby got busy organising EXPOSURE CARES, a food drive for his community in Nassau.

Please tell us a little about the charity/event that you were involved with.

Throughout the world we are being faced with the Covid 19 pandemic and here in the Bahamas is no exception. In the Bahamas we have so many families that are hurting, broken and without jobs; therefore, unable to provide food for their families. For this reason Exposure Cares was formed. To feed persons that are in need.

How did you get involved with this charity event? What was the idea behind it?

Exposure Cares is a charity organization derived from my photography company, Exposure Photography. The idea behind the organization was and still is to assist with fulfilling the needs of persons.

What did the charity set out to do?

On July 4th 2020 Exposure Cares mandate was to feed, clothe and give care packages (groceries) to 200 families.

My advice for persons who want to get involved with an issue is; just do it.”

Were you successful in achieving the goal?

Yes we were, Exposure Cares fed, clothed, and gave groceries to 260 families, which definitely exceeded our expectations.

Did you get much media coverage?

On the day of the event, the food and clothes drive was fully covered by local media houses. With publications being posted in the local news papers and on the local news.

Was this a one off, or is it something you plan on continuing in some capacity?

This charity event is planned to take place every year. With the mandate of fulfilling the needs of the people. So wherever there is a need Exposure Cares and Exposure Photography will be there.

What was the most satisfying thing about getting involved with this?

The most satisfying thing for me and my team is seeing the grateful looks on persons’ faces who are genuinely in need.

What was the hardest thing?

The hardest thing I would say is seeing people who live in this paradise called the Bahamas having to suffer and not able to provide for their families.

What advice would you give to people who want to get involved with an issue and do something to help?

My advice for persons who want to get involved with an issue is; just do it. Don’t over think, don’t second guess if you should. Step out on faith and just make it happen. Remember that every little counts.

Were you able to put your photography skills to work with this charity/ event?

Of course I did! Some of my images were actually placed in one of the local papers that was talking about the event.
